Public Accounting Firms – Learn The Difference Between Private and Public Firms

In the world of financial accounting, there are two main sectors, private and public.. Public accountants work for or contract out to various public accounting firms.

However, private accountants, also referred to as ‘internal’ accountants, work specifically for one entity. Other firms will usually contract out to public firms to perform different services, like audits, assurances, tax advisory and consulting. In order to work for a public firm, you must possess are certain set of skills.

These include, exceptional communication and people skills, as these firms serve a wide variety of clients. Another skill you should posses is a proficiency in marketing as you may be required to bring accounts to your firm. This is generally true for those specifically hoping to become partner at their firm at some point.

There are many public firms but PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Deloitte & Touche and Ernst & Young are considered to be the big four accounting firms.
